Brown had filed multiple noise complaints about Spike — a white Maltese — who lives next door to her Hemet home, Riverside County Animal Services officials said. On Monday, Spike went missing, but Brown was spotted unloading the dog from the trunk of her car outside a water district building in the town of Beaumont, Animal Services Sgt. Two water district employees took Spike to a veterinarian, who located the dog’s owners by scanning a tracking chip embedded under the animal’s skin. San Diego County sheriff’s officials said Brown was a corrections officer in the city of Vista, but they were unaware of the arrest. read more…

Lori Oelrich said the bear came out of the shadows and attacked her dog named Nick. Her other dog, Copper, wasn’t hurt, but Nick had wounds to the neck and hind end. She said every time Nick tried to come toward her, the bear would grab him again. She’s bought a bell and fog horn and expects to use them for some time to scare bears away. Wildlife experts say bears are looking for food at this time of year and will go for bird seed at a feeder or garbage in cans. read more…

The dog, named Bobo, suffered second- and third-degree burns over 50 percent of his body Sunday after he was tied up with speaker wire and placed on a burning telephone book on a lit stove burner. Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital veterinarian Dr. Elisa Mazzaferro said Thursday morning that the complications of being burned were too much for the animal’s organs. Police on Sunday arrested Bobo’s owner, 38-year-old Tanya Martin, on suspicion of fourth-degree arson and animal cruelty. Martin remains jailed on $10,000 bond, and is due in court Thursday. Carol Lince said it happened Monday at her home about 35 miles southeast of Butte. Lince said she let her three poodles outside, and then heard one “screaming bloody murder. Lince kicked at the deer’s hind legs to try to get the animal off her dog. Lince started walloping the deer’s head with her fists until it eventually jumped her fence and ran off. Lince said she sustained bruises where the deer rammed its head into her abdomen. read more…

MOSCOW (AFP) — Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s dog Koni was the unlikely recipient of a present — a satellite-tracking collar able to detect the canine’s every step — during a government meeting Friday. Though the device had been ready since summer, “we just didn’t have time to meet you with Koni,” Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov told Putin, as cited in a government statement. Putin has been fascinated by the cutting-edge technology. Donations to the Robert Emery Memorial Veterinary Scholarship at Houston Community College can be made online at hccsfoundation. A loner hailed as a hero by animal lovers after he died trying to rescue three dogs is to be cremated next week and memorialized with a veterinary paramedic scholarship at Houston Community College. Among those who took up his cause were Cheryl Lang, of the Houston nonprofit organization, No Paws Left Behind, and a Clear Lake-area resident, Kellye Nagata, who searched the Internet to ultimately locate a daughter who hadn’t seen Emery since she was 5 years old. Contributions collected by Lang’s organization to memorialize Emery will go toward a $2,000 annual scholarship at the Veterinary Paramedic program at Houston Community College Northwest in Katy. read more…

Now almost 10,000 people have signed an online petition urging the Army to let Beberg bring the puppy home. WASHINGTON (AP) — An animal rescue group left Baghdad on Wednesday without a puppy whose cause has been championed by thousands of people from around the world. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International says the military finally agreed to allow the dog, Ratchet, to leave the country, but only 30 minutes before the flight out, too late for the dog to make it. Gwen Beberg, 28, of Minneapolis, adopted Ratchet after she and another soldier rescued the puppy from a burning pile of trash in May.
