Pennsylvania dog lovers notched a victory Wednesday when the state House of Representatives passed sweeping dog law reforms by an overwhelming margin, two days after soundly defeating amendments to defang the prospective laws. Now the bills, which attempt to remove much of the institutional cruelty enshrined within Pennsylvania’s commercial dog breeding industry, move to the Senate. With little time remaining in this year’s legislative session, we encourage our midstate senators to resist the influence of the dog industry lobbyists — which include, oddly, an organization of state veterinarians — who managed to persuade their shills in the House to insert those ultimately doomed amendments last week. The highlights of the bills passed by the House last week include elimination of the use of wire cages which deform dogs’ paws; limits to how high those cages can be stacked; creation of outdoor runs for animals who rarely, if ever, see the sun; and elimination of brutal methods to debark and bob the tails of puppies. read more…
