There are plenty of parks – and even more dogs – in Toronto, but there aren’t many places where a dog can run wild and free without getting under somebody’s skin. On the west side of the beach, there’s an off-leash area where it’s not unusual to find 20 or more dogs roaring around together, socializing and sniffing each other while their caretakers throw stuff for them to retrieve and make small talk. Kelly Manis, who takes care of other people’s dogs, emailed to say that old-fashioned, wire-and-slats snow fencing in the off-leash area is injuring dogs that come into contact with the wire, adding that one of the dogs in her care recently suffered a cut over its eye. We went there yesterday and met up with Manis, as well as other dog walkers, who took us to an area where the snow fence was erected this year to protect saplings planted by a conservation group as part of a waterfront regeneration project. Several dogs walkers have contacted city Councillor Paula Fletcher, who represents the area, to complain about the problem, said Manis, but so far, only one email has received a reply, which said it would be re-directed to parks officials. read more…
